Results of the Vancouver Farmers Markets BC Apple Pie Bakeoff 2009
CORRECTION NOTE: The winner of the BC Apple Pie contest was Chris Fletcher, not Chris Stewart. I think Chris Stewart was the founding drummer of the band Genesis, who ironically ended up becoming a farmer. Chris Fletcher is one of the nicest and definitely the most sharply dressed helper at our markets and apologies for mistaking one Chris for the other.
…and the results are in, this time with lovely photos of the top four pies.
This past Sunday marked the annual Harvest Festival at the Kitsilano Farmers Market, and part of the festivities included a BC Apple pie bake-off competition. This year we had seven entries, which may have been lower than previous years, did not mean that competition was lame. Seven competitors from all over Lower Mainland competed by producing the best-tasting and most-appealing apple pie constructed with local BC apples.
This year we brought three veteran judges to critique pie crust, apple flavour, and overall most delicious experience. The judges from left to right were:
- Chef Mark Halyk from the Kitsilano Community Centre Culinary Program
- CBC’s The Early Edition Food Host and local celebrity Margaret Gallagher (with four day old son)
- Chef Mary Macintyre from Little Nest (cafe) on Commercial Drive
And the results…
Best Pie runner-up award recipient - Theresa Diamond - with her pie…
Then in 3rd place - Roberta LaQuaglia with her pie…
oh…I’m already having difficulties posting this up *drool*
And then in 2nd place - our finisher…Rachael Tang with her pie…
Congrats to Rachael Tang!
And then our First Place finisher and Winner of the 2009 BC Apple Pie Bakeoff is…
Chris Stewart with his winning pie below…
Congratulations Chris! Your hard work has paid off and now there is probably a line-up of people interested in your recipe and potential orders for Thanksgiving Day pies!
Chris won a handy amount of gift certificates to the Farmers Markets, a hand painted pie plate, and 5 pounds of freshly picked BC apples.
Thanks to everyone who participated, volunteer Cheryl for helping to proctor the judging, and of course our judges for deciding this year’s winner!
